The Car Scrapping Initiative is mainly intended to revive and boost Britain’s ailing motor industry. The “Cash for Scrap” Scheme has also been billed as an environmental measure because new cars are more fuel-efficient than old ones. The UK Car Scrappage Scheme: Key Details

• The “Cash for Bangers” Incentive commenced mid May 2009 and has a fixed budget of £300 million.
• The scheme runs till March 2010 or until the fixed budget allocated by the Government for it is used up.
• Buyers will be offered £2,000 bonus towards a new vehicle if they trade in an eligible vehicle. The amount is made up of £1000 from the government and £1000 from the vehicle dealer.
• It applies to commercial vans (not exceeding 3.5 tonnes) as well as cars that are 10 years old or more.
• The Car Scrapping scheme will be voluntary for vehicle manufacturers and dealers

Car Scrappage Scheme: Old Vehicle Eligibility

In order to get the “Scrap for Cash” Discount:
• The old vehicle must be a Car or Small Van weighing no more than 3,500 kilograms (kg) - 3.5 tonnes
• It must be first registered in Britain on or before 31 August 1999
• The old vehicle must be registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) in your name
• The traded vehicle must have a current MOT test certificate before date of order for the new vehicle
• It must have been registered to you continuously for 12 months before the order date of the new vehicle
• The Claimant must have a UK address on the registration certificate (V5C)

Car Scrappage Scheme: New Vehicle Eligibility

The new vehicle you want to buy should meet the following:
• The vehicle must be a car or small van weighing up to 3,500 kg (3.5 tonnes)
• It must be first registered in the UK on or after mid May 2009
• The vehicle must be declared new at first registration in the UK with no former keepers

Government’s Vehicle Scrapping Discount Scheme: How to Apply

You have to check with your local motor dealer to find out whether they have joined the car scrappage scheme or not. The dealer will check that the vehicle being traded in and the new vehicle being bought both meet the requirements of the scrappage scheme. The motor dealers will sort out the paperwork for motorists participating in the scheme and arrange for the old vehicle to be scrapped.
