This Vehicle Discount Initiative was announced during the April 2009 Budget by Chancellor Alistair Darling and the scheme took off mid-May 2009.

About 300 million pounds has been budgeted for the car scrapping scheme and it will run till March 2010 or until the fixed budget is used up.

Old vehicles (cars and small vans) weighing no more than 3.5 tonnes and meeting the criteria can be traded in for a new vehicle under the scheme. The bonus on offer is a maximum of £2000 off a new car for anyone who takes their old vehicle over ten years old to be scrapped.

Other eligibility criteria for the new “Cash for Bangers” Government’s Car Scrappage Incentive include:

UK Car Scrap Scheme Eligibility:Old Vehicle

• Must be a car or small van not exceeding 3,500 kilograms (kg)
• Must be first registered in the United Kingdom (UK) on or before 31 August 1999
• Must have a current MOT test certificate before date of order for the new vehicle
• Must be registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) in your name
• The Keeper must have a UK address on the registration certificate (V5C)
• The old vehicle must have been registered to the Keeper continuously for 12 months before the order date of the new vehicle

UK Car Scheme Eligibility:New Vehicle

• Must be a car or small van weighing no more than 3,500 kg
• Must be first registered in the UK on or after the car scrappage scheme was introduced (mid May 2009)
• Must be declared new at first registration in the UK with no former keepers
